Friday Frivolity: Christopher Lee's Heavy Metal Epic, aka I can only hope to be that cool when I'm 88.

Wow.  I don't know how I  missed this!  Christopher Lee (aka, Count Dracula, aka Saruman, aka Count Dooku, aka the Jabberwocky, aka about a million others -- his imdb page is pretty much a mile long) is a heavy metal singer.  Don't believe me?  Take a gander.

Symphonic metal is my new favorite thing.

Free Music Madness: Halloween Sampler to Scare You... or make you laugh.

Ok when I saw this I almost didn't give it a listen because I thought it was sure to be dumb and super cheesy, but its actually pretty entertaining.  Amazon currently has 16 Halloween-themed tracks available for free download on the Experience Halloween sampler.  Track titles include:  "Someone Gave Me Health Food on Halloween," "It's a Hip Hop Halloween Night," "Zombie Woman Medley." From what I've heard so far, there's a good bit of lighthearted electronica and ghostly goofing around.

Free-and-legal download from Amber Rubarth!

Is the download you're looking for no longer available?  :(  Free-and-legal tracks are often offered only temporarily, so I'm sorry if you have missed the window for this one.  Look to the right to subscribe via email, feed reader, blogloving, twitter, etc, and I'll make sure that you never miss out on free music again!

Now through the 31st you can get a free download of "A Full Moon in Paris" by singer/songwriter Amber Rubarth, courtesy of ZonePerfect protein bars.  If you like the bars, I think they're still giving away coupons to try their newest flavor free, so click Free Bar to check that out while you're over there too.

I wasn't familiar with this artist previously, but she has a smooth, mellow sound that's very enjoyable.  You can check Amber out on Amazon or her site if you want to hear more.

And guess what I just found!  On her site, there's another free download when you sign up for her newsletter, a track entitled "Edge of My Seat."

Double free music fun!

Free Country Music Playlist! 10 tracks from Joey+Rory, Josh Kelley, Justin Townes Earle, & more!

People Magazine has a new country music playlist available through November 15th!  The exclamation point is for y'all who get excited about country music, since as you know I'm kinda lukewarm on it myself.  Which isn't to say I won't make an exception now and then, so if any of these are really awesome then be sure to comment and let me know so I can get in on it too.

You will find 10 tracks available for free download, including music from Joey + Rory, Josh Kelley, Katie Armiger, Dale Watson, Ty Herndon, Chelsea Field, Justin Townes Earle, and Lucas Hoge.

So, are we excited about any of these?  Clue me in if we are, cuz I honestly have no idea... when I was picking artists to put in the title I went with all the "J" names, since I don't know who among this bunch is best/coolest, haha!

A Review of Pushing Daisies... aka, a heartfelt elegy for a show long gone

Why are the shows I like always cancelled??  Even when I don't know that I like them before they're cancelled? Alas, I'm currently mourning the cancellation of Pushing Daisies... a show whose cancellation was mourned by the rest of the world almost about a year ago.  (the rest of the world who cared anyhow, since color me skeptical that it would have been cancelled had the whole world actually been watching it...)

Despite its fully cancelled-and-buried status, I'm going to review it just the same.  My advice?  Go add it to your DVD queue on netflicks, and cross your fingers with me that it will be resurrected.  I'm hoping for a movie, but word on the street is that the missing third season of Pushing Daisies might be presented as a graphic novel... which would be pretty cool too.

Pushing Daisies has the quick-and-clever dialogue of the Gilmore Girls, with the complicated situations of life-and-death interplay from Dead Like Me, and a body count that you'd expect from Castle.  Its smart, funny, and sweet, and centers around, believe it or not, a pie maker-turned-detective named Ned who can bring people back from the dead with a single touch.  Naturally its not quite so simple as that, because if Ned touches that person again then he or she is dead-for-good, and if the person he touched stays alive for more than a minute, someone else dies in their place, but it's enough so that Ned can use his gift to help solve murders and bring justice to those whose lives were ended prematurely.

The set of Pushing Daisies is picture-book bright and cheery, probably to counter the inherent morbidity of a show centered so much around death, but the real charm of the show is in the characters. Skillfully acted, by a cast that includes the charming Lee Pace (who apparently is making an appearance in Twilight: Breaking Dawn??), the characters seem to care about each other.  And they made me care about them too.  Curses on whoever "ok-ed" that cancellation!

If you want to check out Pushing Daisies yourself with absolutely no commitment, you can find full episodes from the first season online.  Chances are, you'll either love it or hate it.  Let me know if you love it so we can commiseration together over its cancellation!

iTunes Weekly Free Music... Australian Soul from Lylit, Neil Young, collaborative heavy metal, and more!

This week on iTunes you'll find Australian soul music from a female vocalist named Lylit, Neil Young with "Walk With Me," and a music video of heavy metal greats Metallica, Megadeath, Slayer, and Anthrax collaborating on a cover of  Diamondhead's "Am I Evil."  Oh yeah, and what's probably my favorite for the week -- the Cancion de la Semana,  "Versinho Numero Um" from Mallu Magelhaes.

No TV this week unfortunately, but some stuff worth grabbing just the same!

Par-tay in Your Mailbox: Food Should Taste Good chips and Yogi Tea!

Yayyy more of my favorite stuff for free!  I love it when this happens hehe.

Right now if you "like" Food Should Taste Good on facebook, they'll send you a coupon for a free bag!  These really are good chips - there are a couple bags in our pantry right now.  Awesome freebie!

This next one has been around for a while, but since I love this tea I thought I'd mention it again.  If you go to the Yogi Tea website you can send an e-card "Well Wish" to a friend (or yourself, lol) and after the person receives it they can pick a "duo" of Yogi teas that they'd like to receive in the mail to try.  Yogi Tea is awesome;  they have a large variety of flavors, and use predominately organic ingredients.  Brighten somebody's day (or your own, haha) with a sample!

Enjoy the party in your mailbox!  I know I will.  ;)

Free Music Madness -- Quick Catch-Up Edition. Beyonce & gospel, heavy metal, and everything in between!

For twelve heavy metal tracks, you'll want the Armoury Records Sampler.

For Beyonce, Solange, Trin-i-tee 5:7, Chaka Kahn, and other gospel tunes, you'll want the Essence Festival Sampler.

If you like Antony and the Johnsons, you'll want to hop over to download "Thank You For Your Love."

If you're mad at me for not finding more straight "rock" downloads, you'll want to give "Turn It On" by Default a listen.

If the picture aptly describes you, you'll definitely want to download the First To Hear playlist.  (My favorite is "Undertow" from Warpaint)

If you want to buy the shirt, check out Threadless.

Daily Deal Sites Totally Worth Knowing: Eversave & Jasmere in tha HOUSE!

First, there was Woot, daily bringing wacky, geeky, and otherwise random items to our computer screen at a  huge discount.  Other sites tried to use the daily deal format with some success, but the whole thing didn't really explode into our social consciousness until Groupon came along. I've been raving about how much I adore Groupon for the last year or so, and it would seem that the rest of the world loves it too, given the site's status as the fastest growing company ever.  Now there are daily deal sites popping up everywhere, but don't just write them off as wannabes... there are several really great ones!  My two newest favorites are Eversave and Jasmere.  I have to love these two in particular because several times now I've been able to snag really fabulous organic/natural, eco-friendly, and/or fair trade items at a big discount.  Going green can be expensive yo!  And both these sites have been really helpful in mitigating some of that money-pain.

Right now Eversave is featuring half off organic babywear from Funkoos, as well as a bonus deal on designer lotions and body products, and another on chic gift items.  The other fun thing about Eversave is that when you sign up for their email list you get an automatic $5 credit, so your first save will be that much better!  My favorite thing that I've bought from them so far was half off organic body products at Anthology... a site that I'd say is half Origins and half Ecco Bella, and all of it wayyy more affordable than either lol.  I wish I could have posted about Eversave while that deal was being offered, but the bummer with daily deals is that it's so hard to spread the word while it's still available... so I'm trying to make up for it by spreading the news about the site and letting you keep your eyes open on your own.  ;P

Jasmere is another favorite of mine, and what's even better, this month they're featuring all Fair Trade companies!  Today's feature is a site called Dsenyo, with super cute eco-friendly bags and totes that support community projects in Malawi.  The other cool thing about Jasmere is that the more people who buy it, the more the price drops for everyone... so the price can start at half off, and end up wayyy lower by the time the deal closes.

So yeah, head's up on these deal sites!  They're really helped me out with greening my house and beauty routine on a budget, and as Christmas approaches they're usually even handier as awesome, unique gift ideas that don't break the bank.  They're well worth checking out.  :)

Par-tay in Your Mailbox: Kashi snacks and True Lime samples!

I love getting stuff in the mail (remind me to tell you about my childhood pen pal addiction sometime), and when that stuff is samples of products I already like it's even better!  Here are a couple of good ones:

Right now you can pledge to "swap in" one of your normal junk food choices for a healthier option at the Kashi Snack Drive, and receive your choice of a free TLC Ripe Strawberry Cereal Bar or the TLC Original 7 Grain Crackers.  Now if only they'd send me samples of their Oatmeal Dark Chocolate TLC cookies...  YUM.

  • (side note regarding Kashi -- when you sign up for a sample, you'll be given the option of joining the Kashi Community.  If you do sign up for the Kashi Community, make sure to go into your profile and check the box to be part of the Taste Tester Panel!  They send out more free samples to their Taste Testers when they introduce new products)

You can also request free samples of True Lemon / True Lime / True Orange -- crystallized, granulated fruit that you can add to any drink from water to soda.  I'm not much on lemon in my water, but I LOVE the occasional Diet Coke and lime, which makes these packets a great little addition to my purse.  Try it for yourself!

Enjoy the party in your mailbox!

Free Sufjan Stevens download! aka, the return of an enigmatic wordsmith

The Age of Adz
Is the download you're looking for no longer available?  :(  Free-and-legal tracks are often offered only temporarily, so I'm sorry if you have missed the window for this one.  Look to the right to subscribe via email, feed reader, blogloving, twitter, etc, and I'll make sure that you never miss out on free music again!

Ohhhhh excitement...  after a period of disappearing off the face of the planet (seriously, I was vaguely worried about him for a while there) Sufjan Stevens has a new album in the offing.  And as you can see from the title, he's still procrastinating on the whole "I'm doing a CD for every state" thing.  (Anybody NOT from Illinois or Michigan feel free to admit that you feel slighted.  I do.)  Entitled the Age of Adz and set for release on October 12th, you can currently preview the tracks on Amazon, and even better, you can download the new track "I Walked" from Sufjan's site for free.  Yayyyyyyy!

PS I just figured out that in 2009 Sufjan released a mostly instrumental CD called The BQE that you apparently can't purchase as MP3s, so I'm not sure what was up with that.    And I'm REALLY not sure how I didn't know about it.  My bad.  Or Sufjan's, for not sending me the memo.
